Kate Butler is American artist, writer and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, on Wurundjeri land.

Through the tactile, intuitive crafts of drawing and ceramic sculpture, she gives form to real and figurative illuminations. Her work in both mediums explores the careful modulation of light and shadow across a surface, linking the light of nature with that of  insight, revelation, and knowledge. Relatively small in scale, the drawings and sculptures refer to the experiences of interiority, hinting at vast or deep space in an intimate scale.

She currently teaches ceramics at the Art Room and sculpture and art history at RMIT.

She is not currently accepting ceramic commissions, but feel free to get in touch if you’d like to know when she’ll make another batch of ceramic lamps.

Butler is currently working on an essay, a story and an educational book on object-based art, due in 2026.
