Kate Butler is an American artist, ceramicist, writer and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, on the land of the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurung.
Trained in plein-air painting and drawing at the Leo Marchutz School, Kate shifted her focus to ceramic sculpture while pursuing her MFA in Fine Art and MS in Art History at The Pratt Institute. Her body of ceramic work now encompasses a landscape of forms evoking architectural motifs and natural phenomena like clouds, forests, the stars and moon. Cosmic in character and yet intimate in form and scale, they speak to the mystic interdependence of nature and the human imagination.
Kate periodically publishes essays on topics in fine art and craft. She teaches part-time at The Art Room, Bisque Studios and Northcote Pottery Supplies in Melbourne.
