Kate Butler is American artist, writer and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, on Wurundjeri land.

Her work in drawing and ceramic sculptures explores the careful modulation of light and shadow across a surface, linking the light of nature with the that of insight and revelation.Relatively small in scale, the drawings and sculptures refer to experiences of interiority, hinting at vast or deep space in an intimate scale.

Butler earned her MFA and MS in Art History from the Pratt Institute in 2019, and a BA in English and Studio Art from the College of Charleston in 2014. In between, she studied and apprenticed at the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing. Today, she teaches ceramics at the Art Room and sculpture and art history at RMIT in Melbourne.

Butler is currently working on an essay, a story and an educational book on object-based art, due in 2026.
